Women's Tennis Falls To BYU
Jan. 31, 2000 MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis women's tennis team opened its season with a 9-0 loss to BYU at the Wimbleton SportsPlex, Monday. The match marked the debut of freshman Sumitra Rao with the Lady Tigers. Rao played No. 6 singles, falling to Lu Oswald, 6-3, 6-2 and falling 8-0 at No. 2 doubles with teammate Betsy Card. Freshman Sabrina Lindemann won the only set for the Lady Tigers, winning her opening set 6-4, before losing the next two sets 6-2, 6-1. Lindemann teamed with Christina Ladyman and the duo almost pulled a win from their No. 1 doubles spot, falling 8-6. Junior Claire O'Donoghue and graduate student Kate Borthwick also fell just short of a doubles win at No. 3, falling 9-7. The Lady Tigers' next matches come in the Southwest Missouri Invitational, Feb. 4-5. The U of M's next home match is Feb. 11 against Louisiana-Monroe.
