Women's Tennis Picks Up First Win of Season

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- - The University of Memphis women's tennis team (1-1) picked up its first win of the season, 6-1, over Butler University (2-3) in non-conference action, Saturday. Butler had won its earlier match against host Saint Louis, 4-3.
Memphis won two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point, with seniors Marlene Dirnstorfer and Viktoria Gruber downing the Butler duo of Alaina Griffin and Christina Laun, 8-6 at No. 1, while the team of freshman Yesica Ares and Kristin Noble won the No. 3 doubles match, 8-2, over Annie Gantz and Kaitlin Elliot.
Memphis then won five of the six singles matches to pick up their first win of the year, needing three sets to pick up singles wins in the first three singles spots. Dirnstorfer improved to 2-0 on the year at No. 1 singles with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 comeback win over Laun, while Gruber downed Griffin, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (2) to pick up her first singles win of the season.
Sophomores Andrea Feichtinger and Kristin Noble added two more Lady Tiger points, with Feichtinger downing Tayo Bailey, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, while Noble downed Gantz, 6-3, 6-0. Freshman Christina Wieser also won her first dual singles match of the year, with a 7-6 (2), 6-0 win at No. 6 singles over Kaitlin Elliott.
The Lady Tigers will remain in St. Louis to face C-USA foe Saint Louis, at 9:30 a.m., Sunday. Saint Louis fell to Butler, 4-3, in their only match of the day.
