FORT WORTH, Texas – Freshman Marta Morga and sophomore Caroline Wegner pulled out three-set victories to lift the No. 31 University of Memphis women’s tennis team (5-2) to a 4-3 win over No. 40 TCU (3-5) on Saturday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

With TCU holding a 3-2 advantage, Morga defeated Monika Sirilova, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, to tie the match up at 3-all. Wegner then sealed it for Memphis with a victory at No. 3 over Mimi Fotopoulos, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

“It was a complete team win today. We needed everyone at different times,” said head coach Lee Taylor Walker. “It wasn’t pretty but it was a great competitiveness and determination for our first outdoor road match. Our fitness is the main reason why we won and that’s a big credit to David Young, our strength and conditioning coach.”

Memphis began the day by taking the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 3. Stefanie Tan and Seda Arantekin gave the Horned Frogs an early advantage with an 8-5 win at No. 2 over Anki Wind and Stefanie Mikesz, the duo’s first loss in a dual match this season. The No. 38 tandem of Wegner and Alyssa Hibberd evened it up with an 8-5 win at No. 1 over Fotopoulos and Sofiko Kadzhaya. Morga and Skylar Kuykendall then clinched the point for Memphis with an 8-5 victory at No. 3 over Parajova and Sirilova for an early 1-0 lead.

Hibberd cruised at No. 4 to extend Memphis’ lead to 2-0 after a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Kadzhaya. No. 52 Tan answered for TCU with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 over No. 99 Mikesz before Parajova knotted the match with a 7-6 (7), 6-1 victory over Kuykendall at No. 2. Tan and Simona Parajova were both in the TCU lineup for the first time since Jan. 25 after being sidelined with injuries.

Arantekin pulled out a 7-5, 0-6, 7-6 (5) win over Wind at No. 5 to give the Horned Frogs a 3-2 lead before Morga and Wegner responded with victories to help Memphis to the win.

The Lady Tigers are back in action tomorrow when they face conference foe No. 75 SMU in a 12 p.m. (CT) match at the Northwood Country Club in Dallas.
