DALLAS - The No. 31 University of Memphis women's tennis team (6-2) took their fourth-straight doubles point and recorded three of four singles wins in straight sets on their way to a 5-2 victory over No. 75 SMU (1-7) on Monday afternoon at the Northwood Country Club.
"This is the first few matches of a critical part of our season so it is nice to come away with two solid road wins," said head coach Lee Taylor Walker. "We don't have any weak links on the team right now. We know that every doubles team and singles position can compete."
The Lady Tigers began the day with Stefanie Mikesz and Anki Wind posting an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles over Yana Erkeeva and Macie Elliott. Memphis then clinched the doubles point as Marta Morga and Liza Tymchenko defeated Holly Verner and Vaszilisza Bulgakova, 8-6, to give Memphis a 1-0 advantage.
Mikesz quickly extended the Lady Tigers' lead at No. 1 singles, collecting a 6-2, 6-2 victory over No. 108 Bulgakova for her fourth win over a ranked opponent this season. Morga then made it a 3-0 match with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 over Elliott.
The Mustangs got on the board as Dasha Sharapova defeated Alyssa Hibberd, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 3 to make it 3-1 Memphis. It wasn't long after that Wind clinched the match for the Lady Tigers with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 over Erkeeva.
Caroline Wegner won her fourth-straight match to put Memphis ahead 5-1 with a 7-6, 1-6, 1-0 (10-5) win at No. 2 over Hristina Dishkova. Anna Kate Anderson ended the match by recording SMU's second point after a 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory over Tymchenko at No. 6 for a final score of 5-2.
