Women's Tennis Opens League Play With 4-2 Win

St. Louis, Mo.-- - The University of Memphis women's tennis team opened its conference schedule with a 4-2 win at Saint Louis, Friday. The win was the Lady Tigers' fifth win of the year, against just one loss.
The Lady Tigers won two of the three doubles matches, with the teams of Ladyman/Lindemann and Card/Westberg winning at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.
Memphis then sealed the win with wins in three singles matches. Senior Christina Ladyman downed senior Jayasree Kuruvilla in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Junior Annika Westberg also downed her opponent at No. 5 singles in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Saint Louis battled to come back to steal the match with wins at No. 2, where sophomore Sabrina Lindemann suffered her first singles loss of the season, 6-4, 2-6, 10-4, and No. 6, where junior Laura Hughes fell to Erin Kersten, 6-0, 6-0.
But Memphis senior Betsy Card battled back from a first set loss, 6-0, to win her No. 3 singles match to seal a Memphis victory. Card came back from her first set loss to down Julie Siemers, 6-1, 10-7.
Memphis continues its conference schedule with a 2:30 p.m. match against DePaul, Saturday. The Lady Tigers will also face non-conference foe Murray State after the completion of the DePaul match.
