TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of Memphis women's tennis team picked up a split in Tempe, Ariz., on Wednesday at the Whiteman Tennis Center. The Lady Tigers picked up a 7-0 win in the morning over Eastern Arizona College but were swept 7-0 by No. 32 Arizona State on Wednesday afternoon.

Following the two results on Wednesday, the Lady Tigers' record now stands at 7-11 on the 2009-10 season. Coach Lee Taylor Walker's squad will continue their road trip in the Grand Canyon State with a match against No. 59 Arizona at 1:30 p.m. (MST) at the Robson Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz.

In Wednesday morning's against against the Gila Monsters of Eastern Arizona College, the Lady Tigers got out to a quick 1-0 lead after a sweep of the doubles matches. At the No. 1 spot, Ashley Murdock and Marjorie Ondeck picked up the 8-4 victory over Melanie Viriyapunt and Lara Pujol.

At No. 2 doubles, Amanda Brown and Andrea Arques-Garcia upended Allison Evans and Rachel Clarke, 8-2.

At the No. 3 doubles slot, Kelly Gray and Courtney Collins defeated Brinlee Goodmann and Demi Kempton, 8-1.

In singles, Murdock, a product Memphis' St. Agnes School, upended Viriyapunt in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 10-7.

At the No. 2 slot, Collins returned after missing several matches due to illiness, to defeat Pujol, 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 3 singles, Ondeck, a senior from Monroe, Conn., picked up a 6-1, 6-1, victory over Evans.

 

 

At the No. 4 spot, Brown upended Clarke, 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 5 singles, Arques-Garcia, a freshman from Alicante, Spain, defeated Goodmann, 6-0, 6-0.

Gray, a freshman from Murfreesboro, Tenn., won 6-1, 6-1, over Natalie Young, 6-1, 6-1.

In Wednesday afternoon's match, the Sun Devils got out to the quick lead over the Tigers, sweeping their foes from the Bluff City in doubles. At the No. 1 spot, the Arizona State duo of Micaela Hein and Nadia Abdala defeated Murdock and Ondeck, 8-3. The Memphis pair ended Wednesday's matches with an overall mark of 6-9 in doubles.

At No. 2 doubles, Hannah James and Kelcy McKenna picked up a 6-1, 6-0, victory over Brown and Arques-Garcia. Brown and Arques-Garcia finished Wednesday with a doubles mark of 2-6 after the win over the Gila Monsters and the loss to the Sun Devils.

At the No. 3 spot, Gray and Collins fell to Michelle Brycki and Ashlee Brown, 8-4. Gray and Collins are 6-5 in doubles on the year.

In singles, Murdock lost 6-0, 6-1 to Hein. The Memphis senior netter ended Wednesday with a singles mark of 10-8. She has picked up over 10 singles wins in each of the last three seasons.

At No. 2 singles, Collins fell to Abdala in three sets, 6-0, 1-6, 10-6. Collins concluded the day with a record of 8-7 in singles.

At the No. 3 spot, Ondeck lost to 104th-ranked McKenna of Arizona State, 6-1, 6-0. The Memphis senior ended Wednesday with a record of 6-9 on the year.

At No. 4 singles, the Sun Devils' James upended Brown, 6-4, 6-0. Brown is 5-9 in singles during the 2010 season.

Sianna Simmons defeated Arques-Garcia, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5 singles. The Memphis freshman is 4-9 in singles in her first collegiate season.

At No. 6 singles, Nicole Smith upended Gray in three sets, 7-5, 6-1, 10-6. Gray concluded Wednesday with a 4-12 mark.
