Women's Tennis Suffers 5-2 Setback to No. 51 South Florida

TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 43 University of Memphis women's tennis team could not overcome a No. 51 USF squad that had won nine-straight matches coming into Friday as the Lady Tigers fell 5-2 to the Bulls at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
USF (13-3) jumped out to a 1-0 lead over Memphis (9-6) by taking the doubles point. At No. 3, Vera Bessonova and Olga Martinez defeated No. 65 Alyssa Hibberd and Caroline Wegner, 8-4, while Loreto Alonso-Martinez and Kayla Rizzolo won 8-5 over Stefanie Mikesz and Anki Wind at No. 1.
The Bulls continued their strong play into singles with three straight-set wins. Alonso-Martinez defeated Skylar Kuykendall, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1, before Olaya Garrido-Rivas won 6-1, 7-5 over Wegner at No. 3 to give USF a 3-0 lead. Rizzolo then clinched the match for the Bulls with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Mikesz at No. 2. USF stretched its advantage to 5-0 after Martinez posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Hibberd at No. 6.
Memphis' freshmen came through for the squad once again as the duo of Wind and Marta Morga improved to 17-1 this season in dual play. Morga got the Lady Tigers on the board with a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) win over Bessonova at No. 5 before Wind ended the match with a 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Fanny Fracassi at No. 4 for a 5-2 final.
Memphis travels to Orlando tomorrow to face UCF in an 11 a.m. (CT) match.
