Lady Tigers Upend UT Martin, 6-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis women's tennis team picked up a 6-1 win over the UT Martin Skyhawks on Friday at the University of Memphis Tennis Courts to improve to 8-12 overall on the season. The Lady Tigers started off the match by sweeping the doubles matches against the Skyhawks. Ashley Murdock and Marjorie Ondeck improved their overall mark on the season to 7-11 on the season with an 8-2 decision over Martie Wahl and Belisa de Brito. At No. 2 doubles, Courtney Collins and Kelly Gray took down UT Martin's pair of Jodie Tiley and Alice Laing, 8-2. Collins and Gray are 7-6 as a pair in their first season at the U of M. At the No. 3 spot, Andrea Arques-Garcia and Amanda Brown upended Anna Marie Herbold and Anna Winkelmann, 8-5. It was the third doubles win of the season for the Memphis netters. In singles, Murdock, a senior from Memphis, Tenn., picked up her team-leading 11th singles win with 6-2, 6-3 victory over Tiley at the No. 1 spot. At the No. 2 spot, Collins, a freshman from Fulton, Miss., defeated Johanie Van Zyl, 6-2, 6-2. Van Zyl was the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for her performance in matches the week prior. Collins is 9-8 in singles in her first season with the Lady Tigers At No. 3 singles, Ondeck picked up a three-set victory over Walh, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. The Lady Tiger netter has an overall mark of 7-9. At the No. 4 spot, the Skyhawks got their lone point of the match with a 7-5, 6-4 win from Winkelmann over Brown, a senior from Whitby, Ontario. Gray, a freshman from Murfreesboro, Tenn., was victorious for the Lady Tigers at the No. 5 spot, defeating de Brito, 7-5, 7-5. Gray is 5-13 in singles on the year.
At No. 6 singles, Dara Toulch won her third match of the season with a three-set win over Herbold, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. The Lady Tigers will return to the court on March 27 and March 28, when they head to Virginia for matches with Richmond and William & Mary. |
