Women's Tennis Downs Troy State, 6-1
March 22, 2003
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis women's tennis team earned its 12th win of the season, 6-1, over Troy State, Saturday, at The University of Memphis courts. It was Memphis' first win over Troy State since Apr. 3, 1999.
"This is a team that we haven't beat in a while," Head Coach Charlotte Peterson said. "We usually end up in really close matches with them, so to win this match is a big victory for us."
The Lady Tigers opened the match by winning the No. 1 and 3 doubles matches to take the doubles point and go up 1-0.
That score went to 2-0 Memphis when Marlene Dirnstorfer won her No. 5 match over Emma Heffeman, 6-4, 6-0. Wins from Viktoria Gruber and Andrea Feichtinger at No. 3 and 6, respectively, made it 4-0 Memphis before Troy State got on the board with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles when Mariana Melo downed Memphis' Sumitra Rao. The final two singles matches to finish were the top two singles matches. Senior Monica Gonzalez-Gordo survived a scare to win her No. 2 match, 6-4, 6-4, and Sabrina Lindemann came back after dropping the second set 7-5 to win the third set tie-break, 10-6, to pick up her fourth No. 1 singles victory of the season.
Memphis will hit the road for a three-match swing through Florida beginning Mar. 27th. Memphis will play at Rollins College, the No. 8 team in the country in NCAA Division II, the 27th at 3:30 p.m. (EST). The Lady Tigers will follow that match with a C-USA contest at South Florida, the 30th at 1 p.m. (EST) and will finish the road swing at the University of Central Florida the 31st at 1 p.m. Memphis will return home to finish its home stand against Auburn-Montgomery, the No. 2 women's team in the NAIA, Apr. 3rd at 2:30 p.m. That will mark the final home match for seniors Sabrina Lindemann, Sumitra Rao and Monica Gonzalez-Gordo.
