Gray's Singles Victory Delivers 4-3 Victory Over Louisiana-Monroe on Wednesday

Kelly Gray fought back from losing the first set and being down 3-1 in the second set to upend Ana Burjaili, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, to deliver a 4-3 victory for the University of Memphis women's tennis team over the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks on Wednesday evening at the University of Memphis Tennis Courts. The win gives the Lady Tigers a sweep on the day after picking up a 6-0 win in an earlier match against Tennessee Tech. Memphis finishes the day with a 10-14 record on the season. The Warhawks fall to 9-3 on the season. The match was a battle from the get go on Wednesday evening on the campus of the University of Memphis. The doubles point came down to a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles between the Lady Tiger duo of Gray and Courtney Collins and ULM's Sidney Bruscato and Lena Satge. Gray and Collins were able to win the tiebreaker 7-4 to take the doubles match 9-8 and secure the doubles point for the U of M. Gray and Collins, two freshmen for the Lady Tigers, have an overall doubles mark of 11-6 to lead all Memphis doubles pairs. Memphis also picked up a doubles win at the No. 1 spot from Ashley Murdock and Marjorie Ondeck over Claire Clark and Monica Winkel, 8-4. Ondeck and Murdock are 9-12 in doubles on the year. At No. 3 doubles, the Warhawk duo of Burjaili and Vivian Polak defeated Amanda Brown and Andrea Arques-Garcia, 8-4. Brown and Arques-Garcia are 3-10 on the year in doubles. In singles, the Lady Tigers went ahead 2-0 in the match with a win at No. 2 singles from Collins, a freshman from Fulton, Miss. The Tiger netter upended Satge, 6-1, 6-1. Collins improves to 12-9 in singles on the year. Memphis extended their lead to 3-0 with a decisive 6-0, 6-0, victory from Ondeck, a senior from Monroe, Conn., at the No. 4 spot over Bruscato. Ondeck is 8-11 in singles on the year. The Warhawks got on the board with a win at No. 5 singles from Polak. The ULM netter defeated Arques-Garcia, 6-1, 6-0. Arques-Garcia is 5-12 in singles on the year. Polak has an undefeated mark of 12-0 on the year. Louisiana-Monroe cut the Lady Tiger lead to 3-2 with a 6-4, 6-3, win by Winkel over Brown. The Memphis netter falls to 7-13 in singles on the year. Winkel is 11-1 on the season. The Warhawks tied the match 3-3 with a three-set victory from Clark over Murdock. The Memphis netter won the first set, 6-3, but fell in the next two sets, 6-0, 6-4. Murdock's record falls to 14-10. However, Murdock continues to lead the Lady Tigers in singles victories and is one shy of her career-high 15 dual singles victories during the 2008 spring season. The Lady Tigers will return to the University of Memphis Tennis Courts for two matches this weekend. The matches will serve as the final home matches for Memphis seniors Amanda Brown, Ashley Murdock, Marjorie Ondeck and Dara Toulch. Memphis will take on UAB on Friday at 2 p.m., and Middle Tennesse on Saturday at 2 p.m.
