No. 40 USF Snaps Women's Tennis' Win Streak
April 1, 2011 TAMPA, Fla. - Memphis women's tennis dropped a 6-1 decision to 40th-ranked USF on Friday afternoon at the USF Varsity Courts, ending an eight-match win streak for the U of M. The Lady Tigers (12-7, 1-0 C-USA) came up short in doubles play as Andrea Arques-Garcia and Stefanie Mikesz fell at the third flight to Alessandra Bonte and Kate Parker, 8-1, and Courtney Collins and Kelly Gray were upended 8-4 by Janette Bejlkova and Loreto Alonso Martinez at the No. 1 position. Junior Mariya Slupska and partner Kathleen Hawkins would keep things tight at the No. 2 slot, but the Bulls would complete the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win from Irene Rehberger and Ecaterina Vasenina. Memphis netters continued to struggle in individual play, with No. 107 Collins, Slupska, and Mikesz falling at No. 1-3 singles to ranked USF opponents. Mikesz fought back hard after losing the first set 7-5 to take the second, also 7-5, before falling by a narrow margin in the super-tiebreaker, 10-8. The lone point for the Blue and Gray came at the No. 6 position where Arques-Garcia improved to 11-7 in singles this season with a come-from-behind win over USF's Parker, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. With the win, USF moves to 7-10 overall on the season. Memphis will make its way to Orlando, Fla., for a conference match against the University of Central Florida at 11 a.m. ET on Sunday, April 3 at the Lake Cane Tennis Center
