No. 57 Women's Tennis Defeats Southern Miss, 6-1
April 7, 2012 HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Ranked 57th in the country and in the midst of one the best seasons in program history, the University of Memphis women's tennis team won its 15th match of the season against Southern Miss on Saturday afternoon by a 6-1 final score. The U of M improves to 15-3 (2-0 C-USA) and Southern Miss drops to 2-17 (0-2 C-USA). Memphis began with a sweep of the doubles matches, led by an 8-0 win from Stefanie Mikesz and Alyssa Hibberd at No. 3. Courtney Collins and Kelly Gray secured the doubles point with an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles and Mariya Slupska and Tiffany Welcher finished off the clean sweep, winning No. 2 doubles, 8-5. Mikesz, ranked 69th, opened singles play by surrendering only one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Mackenzie Oskin. Hibberd and No. 74 Slupska followed with a pair of two-set decisions, dropping only three games apiece, to secure the victory for the U of M. Alex Bradley recorded the only point for USM by defeating Andrea Arques-Garcia at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-1. The Tigers ended the match winning the final two match-ups. The 127th-ranked Courtney Collins defeated Alexus Coats, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and 119th ranked Tiffany Welcher claimed the No. 2 singles point, 6-3, 6-4. The Blue and Gray will wrap up its regular season with two road matches at UALR and Tulsa next weekend. Memphis and UALR square off on Saturday, April, 14th at 12 p.m. (CT).
