Women's Tennis Wins Two Singles Matches in 5-2 Loss to UALR
April 8, 2006
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Sophomore Brooke Cowie improved to 2-0 against UALR for the season, picking up a 7-6 (1), 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, but it was not enough to help Memphis in a 5-2 loss to UALR, Saturday morning. The Trojans swept the season series with the Lady Tigers after winning 6-1 earlier in the season in Little Rock.
UALR took an early advantage with an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles. But the No. 2 and 3 matches were battles, with Outi Jarvinen and Ellie Vicary prevailing 9-7 at No. 3 doubles to give UALR the doubles point. With the point already decided, the No. 2 match went to a tiebreak to be determined, and the Trojans came out of that match with an 8-7 (5) win as well to sweep the doubles action.
Memphis then answered back with a pair of wins in singles. Cowie picked up her win at No. 1, her second win in that spot in the lineup of the season, while Alex Tjioe picked up her fifth win of the year with a come from behind, 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 win over Rosario Negrete at No. 6 singles. But those would be the only Lady Tiger points as UALR won matches at No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 to close out the victory, 5-2.
Memphis will wrap up its 2006 home stand, Sunday, against Middle Tennessee. That match will be the final home match for seniors Andrea Feichtinger and Kristin Noble, who are each looking to snap a pair of five-match losing streaks, and will be played at 10:30 a.m. at Rhodes College.
