April 8, 2011
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Junior netter Mariya Slupska tallied two wins in her first-ever outing at No. 1 singles for the Lady Tigers, helping the University of Memphis women's tennis team down Conference USA foe UTEP 5-2 before upending Southern University 6-1 in a doubleheader on Friday. Early in the first match, with doubles play at 1-1, Memphis (14-8, 2-1 C-USA) looked to No. 3 doubles tandem Andrea Arques-Garcia and Stefanie Mikesz to secure the first point of the contest, and the netters responded under the pressure, pulling out a hard-fought 9-7 win over Rebeca Calvillo and Marie LeBlond. In singles, the Miners (5-12, 1-2 C-USA) tied up the dual at one-all when sophomore Kelly Gray retired on court four to Gabi Vazquez. The Tigers would then hammer out four singles wins at No. 1-3 and No. 5 flights, securing the decision for the Blue and Gray, before UTEP would register its second point in a nail biter at the No. 6 position where Arques-Garcia would come up short to Ximena Fuentes in a 10-point tiebreaker, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8). The notable lineup change for the U of M was Slupska competing at the top seed for the first time in her Memphis career, where she knocked off Martina Trierweiler (UTEP) 7-6 (2), 7-5, followed by Carlista Mohammed (SU), in a dominating 6-1, 6-1 performance. Slupska improved to 16-5 overall mark in singles on the season. Memphis went 5-1 in singles competition against the Jaguars on their way to a 6-1 final. The Jags fell to 10-7 overall with the loss. The Lady Tigers are back on the outdoor courts at The Racquet Club of Memphis on Sunday, April 10 at noon (CT) in more conference action against Southern Miss.
