Women's Tennis Falls in 9th Place Match

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - 12th-seeded Southern Miss finished the 2004 Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship in ninth place after defeating ninth-seeded Memphis, 4-2, in the consolation rounds on Saturday at Seneca Park. The Tigers finished its tournament run in 10th place. The Golden Eagles nabbed a 1-0 lead after the tandem of Nicola Slater and Katharina Sadofsky outlasted the Tiger team of Viktoria Gruber and Marlene Dirnstorfer, 8-5, at the No. 1. Nikhila Narra and Grace Kammerer also scored a win at No. 2 with an 8-1 decision over Memphis' duo of Andrea Feichtinger and Yesica Ares. In singles action, Memphis rallied back when Feichtinger swept Sadofsky, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 and Christina Wieser posted a 6-3, 0-6, 6-0 victory over Courtney Ulrich at No. 6. Southern Miss would bounce back as Slater swept Dirnstorfer, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 and Kammerer came from behind to defeat Ares, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. Narra sealed the victory with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 decision over Gruber at the No. 2 spot.
