Women's Tennis Falls to USF in Conference Semifinals

TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 2 seed University of Memphis women's tennis team fell to host and No. 3 seed USF, 4-2, Saturday afternoon in the American Athletic Conference semifinals.
The No. 39 Lady Tigers dropped to 14-9 on the season and will have to wait for the NCAA Selection Show on Apr. 29 to see if they will make their second-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. No. 41 USF improved to 17-3 on the season.
The Bulls took a 1-0 advantage early with wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles. The duo of Loreto Alonso-Martinez and Kayla Rizzolo won 8-6 in the top position over Marta Morga and Liza Tymchenko before Vera Bessonova and Olga Martinez clinched the point with an 8-3 victory over Alyssa Hibberd and Skylar Kuykendall.
In singles, USF grabbed straight-set wins as Alonso-Martinez posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Kuykendall at No. 1, and Martinez claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 over Tymchenko.
Morga and Anki Wind kept Memphis in it as the freshmen answered with straight-set wins of their own. Morga improved to 24-6 on the season with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Fanny Fracassi at No. 4. Wind increased her team-high win total in singles to 25 following a 7-5, 6-3 win over Bessonova at No. 5 to make it a 3-2 match.
However, the Bulls ended Memphis' comeback bid as Olaya Garrido-Rivas won a tight 7-5, 7-5 match over Stefanie Mikesz at No. 3 to make it a final of 4-2.
