Lady Tigers Drop 4-3 Decision to Tulsa in C-USA Semifinals
HOUSTON, Texas - The No. 33 University of Memphis women's tennis team (17-6) could not hold on to a late lead in the Conference USA semifinals as the Lady Tigers fell to No. 24 Tulsa (19-5), 4-3.
The Golden Hurricane took a 1-0 lead after doubles play as Renata Kuricova and Maria Sant'Anna won 8-3 at No. 3 over Stefanie Mikesz and Caroline Wegner before No. 21 Samantha Vickers and Isaura Enrique defeated No. 71 Courtney Collins and Kelly Gray 8-5 at No. 1 to clinch the point.
Memphis came back to take a 2-1 lead with Tiffany Welcher winning 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2 over Enrique before Alyssa Hibberd recorded a 7-6 (5-0), 6-3 victory at No. 5. Tulsa evened the match at 2-all with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) win from Michelle Farley at No. 3 over Liza Tymchenko.
After falling 6-1 in the first set, Wegner cruised with 6-3 and 6-0 scores in the final two sets over Saana Saarteinen at No. 4 to put the Lady Tigers up 3-2. Over on court 1, No. 48 Collins tried to win in straight sets over No. 14 Vickers after a 7-5 first-set win, but Vickers responded with scores of 6-3 and 6-2 to tie the match up once again.
The final point came down to a third-set tiebreaker on court 6 between Mikesz and Kuricova. Kuricova won the first set convincingly, 6-1, but Mikesz answered with a 7-6 (8-6) second-set victory. With Mikesz up 6-5 in the third set, Kuricova rallied to even up the score at 6-6 before going on to win the tiebreaker 7-4 and give Tulsa the win.
The Lady Tigers will wait to see who they face in the NCAA Tournament on April 30 when the NCAA Selection Show airs at 5:30 p.m. The NCAA Regionals will take place May 10-12 on the campuses of the top-16 teams.
