Women's Tennis Ends Season With 4-0 Loss to No. 9 Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The No. 33 University of Memphis women's tennis team (18-7) wrapped up a historic season as the Lady Tigers fell to No. 9 Alabama (21-5), 4-0, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium.

The Lady Tigers ended the season with six wins over ranked opponents, including three victories over top-25 teams, while making their first NCAA Tournament appearance.

Graduate student Tiffany Welcher and senior Kelly Gray ended their careers while senior Courtney Collins will play at the NCAA Singles Championship from May 22-27 in Urbana, Ill.

Alabama took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The No. 7 team of Alexa Guarachi and Mary Anne Macfarlane took an 8-1 decision over Welcher and Alyssa Hibberd at No. 1 before No. 83 Antonia Foehse and Maya Jansen defeated No. 77 Collins and Gray, 8-5, at No. 2.

In singles, the Crimson Tide were able to pick up three straight-set wins as No. 36 Guarachi earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Welcher at No. 2 to get Alabama on the board in singles play. Shortly after, No. 118 Jansen defeated Skylar Kuykendall, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 for a 3-0 Crimson Tide advantage. At No. 6, Emily Zabor capped off the Alabama win with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Hibberd to advance Alabama to the Round of 16.
