Women's Tennis Posts Big Wins in Little Rock
Sept. 20, 2013
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The University of Memphis women's tennis team got off to an impressive start in the 2013 fall season with a 4-1 record on the first day of the CCLR Collegiate Invitational.
"We are improving as a team and that's what's important," said head coach Lee Taylor Walker. "The new things we have been working on are showing on the court and I'm excited about that. Everyone played with great effort and composure today and we are looking forward to another great day tomorrow."
Memphis began the day in doubles as junior Alyssa Hibberd and sophomore Skylar Kuykendall posted a 6-3 win over Ole Miss' Allie Robbins and Julia Jones in an experimental doubles scoring format that will be used some of the 2013-14 season.
In singles, senior Stefanie Mikesz got the Lady Tigers started with a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Oklahoma's Morgan Chumney in the "C" Draw. Sophomore Caroline Wegner followed Mikesz with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 victory over OU's Whitney Wofford in the "B" Draw, while Hibberd dropped a close match to OU's Mia Lancaster, 2-6, 7-6, 7-5, also in the "B" Draw.
In the "A" Draw, Kuykendall ended the day for the Lady Tigers by posting a 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 win over No. 39 Caroline Rohde-Moe of Ole Miss to defeat the highest-ranked player of her career.
"I am proud of Skylar for her ability to maintain such a high level physically and mentally for three sets," Walker said. "Last year, she could do that for a set and sometimes two sets. For her to do that against one of the best players in the country shows how much she is maturing as a player."
