LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The University of Memphis women's tennis team wrapped up their first weekend of competition at the CCLR Collegiate Invitational by compiling an 8-8 record at the event, which included five nationally-ranked programs from a season ago.
Junior Alyssa Hibberd collected Memphis' lone win on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Oklahoma's Whitney Wofford in the "B" Draw. In the same draw, sophomore Caroline Wegner fell to OU's Mia Lancaster, 6-3, 6-3.
In the "A" Draw finals, sophomore Skylar Kuykendall dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision to Ole Miss' Julia Jones, who defeated two top-50 opponents to reach the championship. Kuykendall also posted a big upset this weekend by defeating the tournament's top seed in No. 39 Caroline Rohde-Moe of Ole Miss on Friday.
The doubles championship between the 37th-ranked duo of senior Stefanie Mikesz and Wegner versus No. 9 Kenna Kilgo and Samantha Adams of Texas Tech was canceled due to injury.
Freshmen Anki Wind and Marta Morga began their careers as Lady Tigers by competing in the qualifying draw at the Amelia Island 10k in Florida. After a close 7-6 (1) first set win, Wind cruised to a 6-2 second set victory over Victoria Flores of the United States to move on to the second round. Morga dropped a 7-6 (3) first set that went back and forth before USA's Alexa Graham took the match after a 6-4 second set win.
Wind will face Graham tomorrow in the second round of the qualifying draw.
Next weekend, four Lady Tigers will play in the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Redshirt senior Liza Tymchenko and Kuykendall are slated to compete in the prequalifying singles and doubles draws while Mikesz and Wegner will begin play in the qualifying doubles draw.
