CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Memphis women's tennis team went 1-2 on its first day of competition in the A Singles bracket at the Chattanooga/Baras Fall Classic, Friday. Freshman Brooke Cowie came back in dramatic fashion to pick up her first collegiate career victory, coming back from a 6-1 first set loss to Erin Moakler to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-2. The second match of the afternoon pitted Cowie against UAB's Julia von Samson, but the freshman was unable to pull off a second comeback, falling 6-2, 6-2.

Senior Marlene Dirnstorfer, the top returning singles player and the No. 2 seed in the bracket, was upended by Murray State's Jaclyn Leeper, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 following her first round bye. It was the second win of the afternoon for Leeper.
