AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. - Freshmen Skylar Kuykendall and Caroline Wegner were victorious in their first matches as Lady Tigers, which advanced them to the round of 32 at the Amelia Island 10k. However, the two faced tough opponents in the second round of competition, ending their run in their first collegiate tournament.

On Sunday, Kuykendall defeated Colombia's Lizeth Ramirez, 6-1, 6-0 while Wegner took down Syracuse's Breanna Bachini, 6-2, 6-0. In the round of 32, Kuykendall was narrowly defeated by former Ole Miss All-American Kristi Boxx, 6-4, 7-6 (3).

"I was very pleased with several areas of Skylar's play," said head coach Lee Taylor Walker. "She competed great and outplayed Boxx from the baseline. Her serve let her down today but I know that's something we can correct. The good thing is Skylar found out today that she is more than capable of competing with any college player in the country. Boxx is a great player with a lot of experience."

In Wegner's second match of the tournament, she faced Maria Shishkina of the United States, falling 6-0, 6-3.

"Caroline didn't play well today but it was a great teaching moment, and I think she learned a lot of things that will help her improve," Walker said. "She had a chance in the second set to make a move but today wasn't meant to be. We look forward to taking all the things we have learned this week and applying them to our next tourneys."

The Lady Tigers now focus their attention on the ITA Women's All-American Championships, Sept. 29-Oct. 7, in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Representing Memphis will be Wegner, Tiffany Welcher, Kelly Gray and Alyssa Hibberd. The prequalifying draws will feature Wegner and Gray in doubles action and Welcher and Hibberd in singles play. Beginning Oct. 4, the main draw will include the No. 31 duo of Welcher and Hibberd as they face off against some of the best doubles teams from around the nation.
