Three Lady Tigers Advance at UTC Tournament

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - A trio of Lady Tigers advanced into the Round of 16 at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga Baras Fall Classic on the first day of competition, Friday. Senior Marlene Dirnstorfer advanced in the A singles draw with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Chattanooga's Catherine Allen, while senior Rebecca Garner blanked her opening round opponent, Erskine's Kimmons Kiser, 6-0, 6-0, to advance in C singles. Lady Tiger freshman Christina Wieser also advanced to the Round of 16 with a walkover due to an injury to Shorter's Estefania Angelone in C singles. Dirnstorfer will face Murray State's Jaclyn Leeper at 8 a.m., Saturday, in the round of 16, while Garner will face Murray State's Tami McQueen beginning at 9 a.m. Wieser will get her first collegiate play against Chattanooga's Gabby Marriot, beginning at 9 a.m. While the three Lady Tigers advanced, four fell in their opening round matches. Junior Viktoria Gruber won the opening set of her match against Chattanooga's Cynthia Oulevay, 7-6, but dropped the second set 6-2 and fell in the tiebreaker 1-0 (5) in A singles. Also in the A singles bracket, sophomore Andrea Feichtinger fell 6-3, 6-0 to Charlotte's Laura Swain. Sophomore Kristin Noble, Memphis' only entry in the B singles bracket, fell to Chattanooga's Beth Flanagan, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round, while freshman Alex Tjioe won her opening collegiate set 6-0, before falling 7-6 (5) and 6-4 in the second and third sets to Charlotte's Marilyn Clark.
In doubles play, the Lady Tigers dropped three doubles matches and the No. 4 seed of Feichtinger and Gruber have not yet opened play after receiving a first-round bye. Second round play, and Feichtinger and Gruber's first doubles match of the tournament against Toledo's Monica Ribero and Viviana Rivero will begin at 6 p.m., EDT.
