Lady Tigers Find Success in Tuscaloosa
Sept. 28, 2008
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Memphis Lady Tigers women's tennis team took the court of the Roberta Alison Fall Invite this weekend on the campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The U of M had some significant wins in the tournament including a Yellow Flight Championship for Robyn Jones, a freshman from Baton Rouge, La. It was the third consecutive weekend that the Lady Tigers took to the courts for a Fall tournament. Last weekend the team split up with players going to the William & Mary Invitational and the Steve Baras Fall Classic. This was the first time this Fall that the whole team competed at the same tournament.
"This was the best I have seen the girls played so far this Fall," said Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker. "All of our players won significant matches this weekend. We continue to learn from week to week and have gotten better. A lot of the girls beat people that they lost to last year, so that is definitely one of the many positives we can draw from this weekend as we move forward this season."
The Roberta Alison Invite marked Jones' first tournament as a member of the Memphis women's tennis team. She won three matches on her way to being crowned her flight's champion. In the first round of competition, Jones upended Sharon Siegel of Tulane, 7-6(7-5),6-1. Siegel is a freshman for the Green Wave and is originally from Hampton Bays, N.Y. In the second round of play, Jones defeated Beth Erwin of Samford, 6-1, 7-5. To win the championship she beat Gabi Vergara of Charlotte. Vergara is a sophomore from El Salvador.

Morgan was 20-5 in her freshman year at Samford, playing primarily the No. 1 and No.2 positions. Murdock was defeated in the second round of competition, losing to Alabama's Courtney McLane, a freshman from Lawrenceville, Ga. McLane was rated as the No. 12 best player in the 2008 recruiting class according to tennisrecruiting.net. Ondeck was 12-7 last year, she spent most of her time at the No. 2 position for the Lady Tigers.
Lindsey Wiseman dropped her first match of the Silver Flight, but came back and defeated Alexis Webb of Murray State, 6-1, 6-3. Wiseman was defeated by Webb last season on Feb. 26 when the Lady Tigers took on the Racers in a dual match. Wiseman lost her final match of the tournament, 7-6(7-3), 6-1, to Lindsey Mallory of Samford. Mallory was 19-3 for Samford last season.
Amanda Brown also dropped her first match in Tuscaloosa. In the second round, the junior from Whitby, Ontario, defeated Katie Barnhill of Tennessee Tech, 6-3, 6-0. Barnhill beat Brown last season on March 1, in a dual match between the two schools. In her final match of the session, Brown fell 6-0, 6-3, to Katerina Gresova of Georgia State.
