Welcher and Hibberd Lose Close One to Top-10 Doubles Team
Oct. 5, 2012
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - The No. 31 doubles team of Tiffany Welcher and Alyssa Hibberd were eliminated in a tight match Friday afternoon as the Lady Tigers fell 8-6 to the No. 7 duo of Khunpak Issara and Lorraine Guillermo from Pepperdine in the back draw at the ITA All-American Championships.
"Today was a disappointing loss because we still did not execute well," said head coach Lee Taylor Walker. "Eventually you have to settle in and start finishing points, and we didn't do that yesterday or today. Luckily, we have four tournaments left this fall that we can improve and look to compete better at. Overall, it was a positive week from a strategy and game plan standpoint, but a disappointing week from a competitive and execution angle."
After falling to two top-30 teams this week, Welcher and Hibberd will look to pick up their first win of the season next weekend at the Memphis Invitational.
"I'm proud of the girls for doing the right things, but they have to get tougher and handle the pressure better in order to win at the national championship level," Walker said.
The Lady Tigers will host Drake, Loyola Marymount and UT Martin, Oct. 12-14, for the Memphis Invitational. On Friday, the Tigers will compete in doubles play as they go up against Loyola Marymount at 2:30 p.m. before facing UT Martin at 3:30 p.m.
