Oct. 13, 2008
OXFORD, Miss. - The Memphis women's tennis team wrapped up play at the Ole Miss Classic in Oxford, Miss., on Sunday at the Palmer/ Salloum Tennis Center. Robyn Jones, a freshman from Baton Rouge, La., led the way for the Lady Tigers, winning the consolation title for her flight. Jones defeated Jordan Zachary of Mississippi State to capture the consolation bracket at the Ole Miss Classic. Jones was knocked out of the main draw in the first round, losing to Marina Ruiz de Gauna, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2. Jones won the first set, but dropped the final two. Ruiz de Gauna was 9-3 in singles play last season for Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns. Jones moved on to the consolation bracket where she won the first match by default and defeated Laura Lundy of Jacksonville State, 6-0, 6-3. Jones is 5-1 so far this season in two fall tournaments for the Memphis Lady Tigers. Earlier this fall, Jones was crowned the champion of her flight at the 2008 Roberta Alison Fall Invite in Tuscaloosa, Ala. "Their was a lot of good competition in this tournament. We lost a lot of close matches that we wish we could have won," said Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker. "I am very proud of what Robyn has been able to accomplish so far this season. It will be vital in improving her confidence heading into the spring season." In doubles play, Ashley Murdock, a Second Team All-C-USA pick last year, teamed with freshman Sarah Irvin, a native of Queensland, Australia, to defeat Ole Miss' No. 1 doubles team of Mimi Renaudin and Laura van de Stroet. Renaudin and van de Stroet teamed together to defeat the No. 7 ranked doubles team in the nation, Melissa Mang and Amanda Granson of Duke, at the Bulldog Invitational in September. Murdock and Irvin fell in the second round to Erica Krisan and Katie Welch of South Alabama, 8-6.
Irvin won her second singles match of the season, defeating Jordan Zachary of Mississippi State, 7-6, 4-6, 6-1. Dara Toulch, a junior from Montreal, Quebec, was the only other Tiger to win a singles match, defeating Kimberly Ferris of Jacksonville State, 7-6, 6-1. Ferris fell to another Lady Tiger earlier this season when she was defeated by Amanda Brown at the UTC/Steve Baras Fall Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn. Amanda Brown and Lindsey Wiseman teamed up to defeat Jacksonville State's Raphaela Wenzel and Julianna Renesto, 8-2. The pair dropped their second match of the doubles draw, falling to UALR's Sybille de Rochefort and Anne Weijenborg, 8-3. Memphis will next compete at the ITA Southeast Regional in Winston Salem, N.C. from Oct. 23-26.
