Women's Tennis Goes 13-2 on Day Two of Memphis Invitational

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis women's tennis team continued its impressive showing at the Memphis Invitational on Saturday as the Lady Tigers went 13-2 on the second day of competition, sweeping Drake in singles and UT Martin in doubles. The Lady Tigers began the day going 4-2 in singles play against Loyola Marymount. No. 115 Tiffany Welcher and Kelly Gray fell in their matches as Welcher was defeated by April Bisharat, 7-6, 6-2, while Gray lost to Tory Parravi, 6-1, 7-6. The freshmen Lady Tigers were all victorious in their matches as Skylar Kuykendall cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Reka Rohonyi. Caroline Wegner defeated Miya Jin, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, while Liza Tymchenko beat Kristine Kouyoumjian, 6-1, 6-4. Picking up the fourth win for Memphis was Alyssa Hibberd, who took down Claudia Razzeto, 7-5, 6-3. The Lady Tigers took the court against Drake in singles play, winning in convincing fashion in several matches. Welcher defeated Nell Boyd, 7-5, 6-3, while Gray beat Ali Patterson, 6-3, 6-2. Wegner and Tymchenko easily won their matches as Wegner took down Evy Van Genechten, 6-1, 6-3, while Tymchenko won against Jordan Eggleston, 6-2, 6-1. Hibberd notched a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Mariel Ante while Kuykendall came back to defeat Klavdija Rebol, 5-7, 6-0, 6-3. Memphis ended the day in doubles play as the No. 31 duo of Welcher and Hibberd defeated Alice Laing and Anna Winkelmann of UT Martin, 8-2. Gray and Wegner teamed up to take down Johanie Van Zyl and Katie McCall, 8-4, before Tymchenko and Kuykendall won 8-6 over Ivon Simic and Anna Marie Herbold. The Lady Tigers will wrap up the Memphis Invitational tomorrow as they begin doubles play against Drake at 11:15 a.m. before facing UT Martin in singles at 1:15 p.m.
