MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Lady Tiger tennis freshmen Alex Tjioe and Christina Wieser opened their home court careers in style, each advancing to the finals of her respective draw, in the opening round of play in the University of Memphis/Varsity Pro Shop Invitational, Friday.

Tjioe, playing No. 5 singles, opened with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Alicia Kutyla from Tennessee Tech, then downed Saint Louis' Rebecca Steer, 6-2, 6-0 to earn a berth in the Saturday finals. Tjioe will face Southwest Missouri's Mali Gakovic at 9:00 a.m., Saturday. Gakovic downed Southeast Missouri's Krista Hoebing, 6-1, 6-0, then won a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-5 thriller over Murray State's Christina Hall to earn a spot in the No. 5 singles finals.

Wieser, in the No. 6 draw, used a pair of straight set wins to advance to her finals spot. Wieser downed Saint Louis' Lindsay Winninger, 6-3, 6-1, then downed SIU-Carbondale's Zuzana Jpalovic, 6-1, 6-2, to advance to the 9 a.m., Saturday final. Wieser will face Southwest Missouri's Liz Garza. Garza blanked SLU's Amy O'Handey, 6-0, 6-2, then posted another 6-0, 6-2 win, this one over Lady Tiger Rebecca Garner.

In No. 1 singles, SIU's Alejandra Blanco will face Tennessee Tech's Marina Tasheva in the 9 a.m. final. Blanco downed Memphis' Viktoria Gruber, 7-6 (3), 6-3 to earn a finals spot. Tasheva snuck past Murray State's Melissa Spencer, 7-6, 7-5, then downed Maja Stanojevic from Southwest Missouri, 6-1, 6-3. Saint Louis' Amand Hellberg and Murray State's Melissa Spencer will face one another in the No. 1 consolation singles draw.

It will be an all Murray State final in No. 2 singles, where teammates Anna Lask and Jaclyn Leeper will battle one another for the championship singles crown. On the consolation side, Tennessee Tech's Margot Carter will face Saint Louis' Katarina Lozanova at 9 a.m., Saturday.

 

 

It's another Lask in the No. 3 singles finals. This time Rachael Lask from Murray State will face teammate Jennifer Ward. While that duo fights out the championship final, Southwest Missouri's Marta Rubina will face SIU's Jessica Knitter in the consolation final.

Tennessee Tech's Maja Russinova and Murray State's Casady Pruitt will square off in the No. 4 singles championship. Russinova downed Memphis' Kristin Noble in the semifinals, 7-6 (7), 6-0. Saint Louis' Melissa Cutler and Southwest Missouri's Ala Alvarez will round out the Saturday morning finals in the No. 4 consolation singles match.
