Women's Tennis Wraps Up Thursday Singles Play
Oct. 18, 2007
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Lady Tiger tennis team got a chance to see how tough competition in the ITA Southeast Region can be as Memphis went 0-4 in singles on the second day of the ITA Southeast Regional hosted by the University of North Carolina. The team will open doubles play this evening, with all three Lady Tiger tandems taking to the court. Sophomore Dara Toulch was the lone Lady Tiger to go three sets in her match, winning her opening set, 6-4, over Elon's Jenn Tucci, then falling 6-1, 6-4 in the second and third sets to end her qualifying singles draw. One step down in the bracket, fellow sophomore Amanda Brown battled, but fell to Charlotte's Yudeshnee Pillay, 6-4, 6-3. The first match on for Memphis was junior Ekin Zafir, but East Tennessee's Tara Byrne won that match 6-1, 6-0. Memphis freshman Lindsey Wiseman had the toughest opening round match of the team, drawing a seeded player in the first round. She fell, 6-1, 6-0, to No. 9 seeded Jessica Preeg of Furman. With no Lady Tiger advancing out of the qualifying singles draw, sophomore Marjorie Ondeck is the lone Memphis singles player left. She will open play in the main draw on Friday against Elon's Deanna Bailey at 9:45 a.m.
