Memphis Duo Advances to Regional Doubles Championship

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Junior Alyssa Hibberd and sophomore Caroline Wegner played near flawless in their regional doubles semifinal match Monday night as the duo downed the No. 32 ranked team of Nadia Ravita and Caitlin McGraw from Kentucky, 8-0, to advance to the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Doubles Championship.
The region's No. 6 seed began the match by breaking No. 2 Kentucky's serve and cruised from there as the two controlled the match from beginning to end. With the win, Hibberd will make her second regional final appearance in doubles after moving to the title match in 2011 with former Lady Tiger Tiffany Welcher.
The Lady Tigers will face the No. 5 seed team of Julia Fellerhoff and Rebecca Shine of Louisville in tomorrow's 10:30 a.m. (CT) final at The Racquet Club of Memphis. The Cardinals also pulled off an upset Monday, taking down the region's No. 1 team of Mara Schmidt and Krisztina Kapitany of Purdue, 8-3.
Wegner also competed in the regional quarterfinals in singles, falling 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-4 to Tennessee's Eve Repic.
In singles, Vanderbilt's No. 3 Georgina Sellyn will battle No. 1 Ravita in tomorrow's 10:30 a.m. final.
Regional champions will advance to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 7-10, at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
