Hibberd and Wegner Come Up Short in Regional Doubles Final
Oct. 22, 2013
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Facing a 7-2 deficit in the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional doubles final to Louisville's No. 58 Julia Fellerhoff and Rebecca Shine, junior Alyssa Hibberd and sophomore Caroline Wegner fended off a couple of match points and won three-straight games to make it a 7-5 match. However, the Lady Tigers' chance at a U.S. National Indoor berth would come up just short as the veteran duo held off a Memphis comeback to win 8-5.
Teaming up together for just the second tournament of their careers, Hibberd and Wegner won four-straight matches to reach the regional championship match, including an 8-0 semifinal win Monday night over the No. 32 ranked team of Nadia Ravita and Caitlin McGraw of Kentucky. With the semifinal win, Hibberd moved into a tie for ninth in career doubles wins at Memphis with 60. The pair is now 6-2 on the season.
Memphis will return to action Nov. 1-3 when the Lady Tigers host the Memphis Collegiate Invite at The Racquet Club of Memphis. Teams attending the event will be Louisville, Marquette, Tulsa, Chattanooga and Miami (OH).
