Women's Tennis Has Successful First Day at Memphis Collegiate Invite

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis women's tennis team posted a 10-2 record Friday to begin their own Memphis Collegiate Invite at The Racquet Club of Memphis.
The Lady Tigers began the day in doubles with redshirt senior Liza Tymchenko and sophomore Skylar Kuykendall picking up an 8-0 victory over Christine Guerrazzi and Ana Rajkovic of Miami (OH). Senior Stefanie Mikesz and freshman Anki Wind also advanced to the second round with ease, recording an 8-3 win over Chattanooga's Alexa Flynn and Kelsey Coots.
In the second round, junior Alyssa Hibberd and sophomore Caroline Wegner moved to the semifinals after a first round bye with an 8-6 victory over Chattanooga's Kayla Jones and Katie Polk to move them to 7-2 on the year. Tymchenko and Kuykendall cruised to the semifinals with an 8-4 win over Abilene Christian's Micah Hermsdorf and Brittney Reed. Mikesz and Wind fell in a close 8-6 match to Tulsa's Samantha Vickers and Isaura Enrique.
Memphis returned to the courts in the afternoon with singles play. Freshman Marta Morga took little time in defeating Chattanooga's Claire Mulyadi, 6-1, 6-1. Wegner also finished in record time with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Marquette's Ali Dawson. Tymchenko posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Laia Hernandez Soler of Marquette while Mikesz took down Marquette's Erin Gebes, 6-2, 6-3, to remain undefeated on the season.
Later in the afternoon, Wind defeated Alix Thurman of Miami (OH), 6-0, 6-3, before Kuykendall pulled out a three-set victory over ACU's Hermsdorf, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Hibberd dropped her first round match to Marquette's Ana Pimienta, 6-3, 6-3.
Memphis will begin play Saturday at 9 a.m. (CT) with doubles. All matches except for two doubles semifinals will be held outdoors. Fans can find results throughout the day on the team's Twitter (@UofMTennis).
