Memphis Invit. Day One Results Get Acrobat Reader

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis women's tennis team had an impressive first day of the Memphis Invitational as the Lady Tigers recorded a 10-2 record at The Racquet Club of Memphis on Friday.

"This was a great step for our program today to go 10-2 against quality opponents," said head coach Lee Taylor Walker. "I'm looking for our team to play even more confident and determined tomorrow. Day one is over now, we enjoyed it. Now, it's time for day two. We will need to play with a lot of passion."

Memphis began the day in singles before going indoors to face Oklahoma, Purdue and Ole Miss in doubles play.

In the White Draw, sophomore Alyssa Hibberd had a solid performance in her opening round match, defeating Tulsa's Maria Sant'Anna, 6-1, 7-5. Also in the White Draw was grad student Tiffany Welcher, who cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Iris Verboven of Ole Miss.

Over in the Gray Draw, freshman Skylar Kuykendall picked up a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Reneta Kuricova of Tulsa, while senior Kelly Gray fell to Tulsa's Saana Saarteinen, 6-2, 6-1.

In the Black Draw was freshman Caroline Wegner, who came out victorious in some tight sets with a 7-6, 7-5 win over Ole Miss' Mariya Milutinovic. Also in the Black Draw was sophomore Liza Tymchenko, who came from behind to take down Tulsa's Michelle Farley, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles, junior Stefanie Mikesz and Caroline Wegner recorded two wins on the day while playing together for the first time this season. In the first round, the duo took down Oklahoma's Mia Lancaster and Whitney Wofford, 9-7, before defeating Purdue's Mara Schmidt and Krisztina Kapitany, 8-2. Kuykendall and Tymchenko also went 2-0 on the night with an 8-5 victory over Oklahoma's Zita Engbrooks and Abbi Melrose before taking down the Ole Miss pair of Verboven and Milutinovic, 8-4.

In the first round of doubles, Welcher and Hibberd fell to Oklahoma's Whitney Ritchie and Hermon Brhane, 8-3, while Hibberd teamed up with Gray in the second round to defeat Ole Miss' Paige Keating and Allie Robbins, 8-3.

The Lady Tigers will begin the second day of the Memphis Invitational at noon in singles play before taking on Tulsa at 3 p.m. in doubles.
