Welcher, Kuykendall Advance to Championship in Respective Draws

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis women's tennis players Tiffany Welcher and Skylar Kuykendall moved on to the championship match in their respective draws on Saturday afternoon after collecting their second-straight singles wins at the Memphis Invitational.
After dropping the first set, 7-6, to Ashleigh Antal of Vanderbilt, Welcher cruised to victory with set wins of 6-2 and 6-1 to face Purdue's Mara Schmidt in the White Draw Finals tomorrow at 11 a.m. Schmidt advanced with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Alyssa Hibberd.
In the Gray Draw, Kuykendall had little trouble in taking down Oklahoma's Whitney Wofford with a 6-2, 6-2 win, facing Tulsa's Saana Saarteinen at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow in the finals. Also in the Gray Draw was Kelly Gray, who fell to Oklahoma's Zita Engbrooks, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
In the Black Draw, newcomers Caroline Wegner and Liza Tymchenko dropped their matches as Wegner was defeated by Oklahoma's Hermon Brhane, 6-0, 7-5, while Tymchenko fell to No. 60 Whitney Ritchie of Oklahoma, 6-4, 6-1.
The Lady Tigers ended the day in doubles action against Tulsa as two Memphis pairs remained undefeated in the tournament. Stefanie Mikesz and Wegner easily defeated Maria Sant'Anna and Reneta Kuricova, 8-2, while Kuykendall and Tymchenko took down Maria Rivera Perez and Carol Benito, 8-4. The duo of Welcher and Hibberd fell in their match with an 8-5 loss to Michelle Farley and Saana Saarteinen.
The final day of the Memphis Invitational will be held indoors tomorrow with doubles play beginning at 8:30 a.m. as Memphis takes on Vanderbilt. Singles will start at 9:30 a.m. with ten matches taking place followed by four matches at 11 a.m.
