Nov. 11, 2012
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Memphis women's tennis team capped off an impressive fall season by sweeping the singles and doubles titles at the Dick Vitale Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic.
"Our team has competed so well at this tourney the last two years," said head coach Lee Taylor Walker. "Beating Florida - the reigning national champions - in the final matches yesterday and then today, I can't think of a better way to end our fall season."
Sophomore Liza Tymchenko helped Memphis walk away with the singles title for the second-straight year by taking down No. 78 Caroline Hitimana of Florida, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. With the win, Tymchenko defeated her second-straight ranked opponent after upending No. 49 Alexandra Cercone in the semifinals Saturday, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0. Tymchenko ends the fall season with a 13-3 record.
In doubles, the senior team of Courtney Collins and Kelly Gray grabbed the title by defeating Florida's Brianna Morgan and Cercone, 8-3. Collins and Gray came together for the first time this season at the Dick Vitale Classic as Collins made her return to the court after recovering from shoulder surgery.
"Our team is really building a strong bond and belief in one another," Walker said. "We wanted objective results this fall that we can look back on in the spring to solidify the belief that we can beat anybody. We have that now. Now we just need to take it one day at a time, get a little better every day and have some fun."
