PROVIDENCE, R.I. - After going a combined 4-2 last weekend in Miami, freshman Marta Morga captured the first-ever American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week honor, the league announced Tuesday.
Morga had a strong start to her first spring season by posting a 2-1 record in both singles and doubles at the Miami Spring Invite. Joining the Lady Tigers in the Sunshine State was No. 9 Miami, No. 16 Vanderbilt and No. 17 Texas.
Morga began the weekend with a 2-0 start Friday after collecting a 6-3, 6-0 win over Texas' Pippa Horn and a 6-3 victory over Vanderbilt's Frances Altick and Georgina Sellyn in doubles with fellow freshman Anki Wind. Morga and Wind competed together for the first time this season.
On Saturday, Morga recorded her first career win over a ranked opponent by taking down Vanderbilt's No. 78 Sydney Campbell, 3-6, 7-5, 10-6. In doubles, Morga and Wind suffered their only setback of the weekend, falling 6-1 to Miami's No. 55 Stephanie Wagner and Brittany Dubins.
On the final day in Miami, Morga was defeated by Miami's Melissa Bolivar in a third set super tiebreaker, 6-4, 2-6, 10-3, but was victorious in doubles play with a 6-3 win over Texas' Lina Padegimaite and Ratnika Batra.
Morga improved her season record to 10-5 in singles and 6-4 in doubles play.
Memphis begins its dual season this weekend when the Lady Tigers travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Memphis will open up against No. 39 VCU on Saturday before facing either No. 3 North Carolina or No. 62 Denver on Sunday.
