CLEMSON, S.C. - The Memphis women's tennis team concluded its opening weekend of dual matches at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday, falling to the No. 11 Clemson Tigers (2-0), 4-0.

Memphis (0-2) found themselves up 6-4 at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, but fell short to the Clemson duos, 8-6. At No. 1 singles, sophomore Courtney Collins, dropped the first set to No. 48 Keri Wong, 6-0, and then battled back to take the lead, 4-2, in the second set, before ultimately being taken down by a final score of 6-4.

"We desperately wanted to get Courtney into a third set because their whole team was tightening and getting nervous," head coach Lee Taylor Walker said following Saturday's match. "But Wong played clutch at the end and was a bit too much today."

Collins, a native of Fulton, Miss., had a solid outing against the No. 1 singles player, and reigning NCAA singles champion, in Friday's 7-0 loss No. 15 Georgia, which boasted four nationally-ranked singles players and one ranked tandem in Intercollegiate Tennis Association polls. Collins took her Chelsey Gullickson to three sets, winning the first 6-3, keeping it close in the second before falling 7-5, and was upended 6-3 in the third set.

"We are in a positive mindset with our team right now and starting to believe that we can knock off some ranked teams this year," Coach Walker said.

Memphis is back in action at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28, at The Racquet Club of Memphis, when it will face UT-Martin.
