Jan. 28, 2014
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference announced Tuesday afternoon that University of Memphis women’s tennis freshman Anki Wind was named the league’s women’s tennis player of the week. This is the second-straight week a Lady Tigers has earned the honor after freshman Marta Morga was recognized last week in the first player of the week awards for the spring season.
Wind began the dual season for No. 31 Memphis (1-1) last weekend by posting a perfect 3-0 mark in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend against No. 39 VCU and No. 3 North Carolina. Wind recorded a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles over VCU’s Olga Terteac to help the Lady Tigers collect their first-ever win in the event. She also teamed up with Stefanie Mikesz to post a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles over Daria Yakauleva and Olga Barscheuskaya, the Atlantic Region’s No. 8 doubles team.
The following day, Wind recorded her second career victory over a ranked opponent, defeating North Carolina’s No. 118 Ashley Dai, 7-6, 6-1, at No. 5 to claim Memphis’ lone point against the defending national indoor champions. Wind is now 12-8 on the season in singles to lead Memphis in wins, while holding an 11-5 mark in doubles play.
The Lady Tigers return to the courts this weekend when they travel to Norman, Okla., to take on Iowa and No. 34 Oklahoma.
