Feb. 11, 2014
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis women’s tennis sophomore Caroline Wegner was selected as the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon. This is the fourth-straight weekly honor for the Lady Tigers after Marta Morga (Jan. 21), Anki Wind (Jan. 28) and Stefanie Mikesz (Feb. 4) captured player of the week accolades the three previous weeks. The four player of the week honors tie a program record with the 2002-03 and 2012-13 seasons.
Wegner posted a 4-0 mark Friday in Memphis’ home opening weekend against Murray State and Chattanooga, helping the Lady Tigers to two sweeps and extending their school record home win streak to 35 matches.
The Hagen, Germany native defeated her second ranked opponent of the season with a straight-set victory (6-4, 6-2) over Murray State’s No. 118 Eleonore Tchakarova to snap her seven-match win streak and clinch the match for the Lady Tigers in a 5-0 victory over the Racers.
Wegner then faced Chattanooga’s Alexa Flynn, defeating her 7-5, 7-5 to give Memphis a 4-0 victory. In doubles, she teamed up with Alyssa Hibberd to go 2-0 at No. 1, taking down Murray State’s Eleonore and Verginie Tchakarova, 6-4, and Chattanooga’s Kayla Jones and Kaylene Chadwell, 6-2.
Wegner leads Memphis in singles and doubles wins this season with a 13-9 mark in singles and 16-7 record in doubles.
Memphis begins a four-match road swing Sunday when it takes on TCU before a match against conference foe SMU on Monday.
