Northern Arizona Edges Lady Tiger Tennis Team

Phoenix, Ariz.-- - The Northern Arizona Lumberjack's improved to 2-3 with a 5-4 win over the University of Memphis (2-3), Thursday.
The Lady Tigers and the Lumberjacks split the singles matches, with Memphis winning at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5, while Northern Arizona won their No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 matches.
Junior Christina Ladyman downed UNA's Vicki Gunnarsson, 7-6, 6-1, to open the Lady Tiger scoring.
Freshman Sumitra Rao won her No. 5 singles match, the first match she has played out of the No. 6 spot where she was 4-2. Rao downed sophomore Kathy Kmiec, 6-3, 6-0 and teamed with junior Betsy Card for the Lady Tigers' only doubles victory over Navarro and Kmiec, 8-4, at No. 2. Card also posted a come from behind victory in her No. 3 singles match over Kim Bruno. Card lost the opening set 7-5, but won the second and third sets, 6-4, 6-2.
The Lady Tigers last chance at turning the tide came in the No. 3 doubles match featuring the U of M's Claire O'Donoghue and Annika Westberg. The duo held a 6-2 lead before the Northern Arizona team of Kim Bruno and Michelle Mohr came back to win, 8-6.
The Lady Tigers remain in Phoenix for two more matches, with the next match against San Jose State slated to begin at noon (Mountain Standard Time), Friday.
