April 1, 2014
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Memphis women's tennis freshman Marta Morga captured the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week honor for the second time this spring, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon. This is the fifth weekly honor for the Lady Tigers this season, setting a new program record.
Morga compiled a 3-0 record for Memphis last week to push her singles winning streak to 12 matches after two wins in singles. She finished the month of March with a combined 12-0 mark. Morga is now 22-5 in singles and carries a 12-0 record in dual play, while holding a 15-8 record in doubles with a 9-4 dual record.
Last week, Morga recorded two straight-set wins in singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win over No. 16 Baylor's Makenzie Craft before defeating No. 55 North Texas' Alexis Thoma, 6-1, 6-3. In doubles, she teamed up with fellow freshman Anki Wind for the first time in dual play, posting an 8-4 victory over North Texas' Thoma and Agustina Valenzuela. Memphis finished its Texas road trip with a 1-1 record, falling to Baylor while defeating North Texas.
Memphis closes out its home slate this Sunday when the Lady Tigers welcome Marquette to The Racquet Club of Memphis for an 11 a.m. (CT) match. Following doubles play, the program will honor senior Stefanie Mikesz as she competes in her final home match as a Lady Tiger. Admission is free to the event.
