Gray Earns C-USA Women's Tennis Player of the Week Honors
April 6, 2010
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis women's tennis netter Kelly Gray was named the Conference USA Women's Tennis Player of the Week as announced by the C-USA office on Tuesday afternoon. Gray, a freshman from Murfreesboro, Tenn., picks up her first Player of the Week honor after finishing with an unblemished 8-0 record in singles and doubles to propel the Lady Tigers to four wins on the week. It marked the first time Memphis has picked up four victories in a span of one week since the 2002-03 season. Last Wednesday against Louisiana-Monroe, Gray fought back after losing the first set and being down 3-1 in the second set to pick up a victory over Ana Burjaili, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, to secure the deciding match point for the Lady Tigers over the Warhawks. Her singles play also played a vital role in helping the Lady Tigers to victories against Tennessee Tech, UAB and Middle Tennessee. In doubles, Gray teamed with fellow freshman Courtney Collins to go 4-0 on the week and help the U of M capture all four doubles point which proved to be crucial in what turned out to be close matches with UAB, Middle Tennessee and Louisiana-Monroe. Gray and Collins' win against Sidney Bruscato and Lena Satge of the Warhawks, was the deciding match in determining the winner of the doubles point on Wednesday. Gray and Collins currently lead all Memphis doubles pairs with a 13-6 mark and have won their last seven matches. This is the first Player of the Week honor for a Memphis women's tennis netter since Sabrina Lindemann received the honor in October of 2003.
