April 10, 2009
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis women's tennis team will travel to Murfreesboro on Saturday for a battle with the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders at 1 p.m., at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center. The Lady Tigers enter Saturday's fray with a mark of 9-11 after falling in a scuffle with the Arkansas State Red Wolves on Thursday in Memphis, 6-1.
With 18 wins in two seasons, Memphis head coach Lee Taylor Walker has put together the program's best two-year split since the period from 2002-2004, where the U of M won 27 matches. Included in the Lady Tigers' nine wins this season are several victories over opponents who have consistently beaten Memphis in recent seasons including UAB, Samford, Southern Miss and Murray State.
Despite a loss on Thursday, the Lady Tigers' doubles tandems picked up the doubles point over the Arkansas State netters. Marjorie Ondeck and Ashley Murdock picked up their eighth doubles win of the season. Amanda Brown and Lindsey Wiseman were also victorious on the day.
Murdock, the Tigers' No. 1 singles player, dropped to 14-9 with a loss in three sets to Jenny Herring of Arkansas State. Murdock is still one win shy of matching her win total from her All-C-USA season in 2008.
MTSU comes into Saturday's match with a record of 8-11. In singles, the Blue Raiders are led by Marietta Bigus at the No. 1 slot. Bigus is 3-15 this season.
In doubles, Marlene Chernin and Anna Djananova are 5-15 this season. They last picked up a win on March 27 against Montana's Liz Walker and Martyna Nowak.
Memphis will wrap up the regular season on Tuesday on the road against Tulane in New Orleans before heading to the C-USA tournament in Houston, Texas.
