May 3, 2011
IRVING, Texas--Junior Mariya Slupska was named Conference USA Women's Tennis Newcomer of the Year for 2011, the conference office announced Tuesday. Slupska's achievement marks the first time in school history a member of the Memphis women's tennis team has received a C-USA postseason specialty award, which are voted on by the league's 12 head coaches. In her first season in C-USA, Slupska posted a team-best 19-6 overall singles note, while going 4-1 in conference play, taking down Petra Vogel of ECU, Alexis Rodriguez of UCF, Martina Trierweiler of UTEP and Vroni van Berlo of USM all in straight sets. Her only conference loss came at the hands of 96th-ranked Alexandra Kichoutkin of top-ranked and 2011 C-USA champion Tulsa. Slupska competed primarily at the No. 2 position, but also spent some time at the top of the lineup where she tallied a 4-1 mark. Slupska's solo performance was highlighted by a mid-season streak when she won 15 of 16 matches, including a 6-1, 6-3 downing of 57th-ranked singles player Shinann Featherston of No. 5 UNC, which helped her earn C-USA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors on March 8. The Lady Tiger was also named to the 2011 All-C-USA third team on Monday. The Kiev, Ukraine native joined the Memphis squad this past January after transferring from Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas, where she took home the 2010 Junior College national title in doubles. Prior to TJC, Slupska spent her freshman year at Kansas State University.
