Women's Tennis Signs Spanish Athlete
May 3, 2013
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - University of Memphis women's tennis coach Lee Taylor Walker announced Friday that Marta Morga will join the nationally-ranked program for the 2013-14 season.
"I am ecstatic to have Marta coming to Memphis in August," Walker said. "She fit in so well during her official visit and we knew that she would add to a great team chemistry on and off the court. Our current girls and coaching staff really love her personality and attitude and can't wait until she gets here."
A native of Madrid, Spain, and product of Instituto de Educacion Secundaria Ortega y Gasset, Morga has been ranked as high as 29th in the Spanish national senior rankings and No. 1 in the city of Madrid. She recently was named Junior Champion of Madrid, and is in the top 8 in the 18-and-under Spanish national junior rankings.
"Marta is exactly the type of player we try to recruit to Memphis," said associate head coach Mark Finnegan. "She has a great heart, is super competitive and is extremely easy to get along with. We cannot wait for her to be a Tiger."
Morga has reached as high as No. 1046 in the WTA rankings after a straight-set win over No. 699 Jessica Ginier of France in September 2012. She has also defeated several players ranked in the top 900 from around the world.
"Spain is one of the best tennis countries in the world, if not the best," Walker said. "So with the results and ranking she has, we know Marta has a great foundation and that she will be very successful. But more importantly, I just want her to have fun with all of the girls and enjoy the process of improving as a player, student, and person. Our team is really creating a special bond with one another and I'm looking forward to watching Marta benefit from that, and also encourage the other girls with all of her strengths as a person."
Morga is the second signee of the 2013-14 women's tennis signing class, joining Anki Wind of Dinslaken, Germany.
"We still have one more spot open on our roster that we are working hard on, but with Anki and Marta this is already one of the best recruiting classes in the country," Walker said. "It's continuing to be a great time for Tiger Tennis."
