MEMPHIS - -
The University of Memphis women's tennis team capped the 2013-14 season with four different entries on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)/Ohio Valley Regional singles and doubles rankings released Wednesday. As a team, the Lady Tigers finished the year ranked fourth in the region.
In the singles rankings, three Lady Tigers ended the year ranked in the region. Freshman Marta Morga capped her freshman campaign with a No. 10 ranking. Morga was 24-6 on the season, including a 14-1 mark in dual season play, and was an American Athletic Conference all-conference honoree in her first collegiate season.
Fellow freshman Anki Wind also was ranked in the singles poll, finishing at No. 13. Wind was 25-10 for the year, including a 15-2 mark in dual season play, and was also named to the all-conference list at the end of her freshman season. Wind ended the season on a four-match winning streak that included two wins at The American Athletic Conference tournament.
Sophomore Caroline Wegner rounded out the Lady Tigers in the singles rankings, capping the season at No. 17 in the region. Wegner was the third Lady Tiger to post 20 or more wins this past season, sporting a record of 20-14 overall and 10-6 in dual season play. Wegner and teammate Alyssa Hibberd also were ranked in doubles in the regional poll, finishing ranked No. 9. The duo spent part of the season in the national rankings, ranking as high as No. 38 in the nation, and finished with a 17-12 overall record, including an 11-4 mark in tournament play.
The women's team has been invited to be a part of the ITA Kick-off Weekend for a second straight season after finishing the year ranked No. 41 in the country. The Kick-Off Weekend features 15 sites hosting a four-team pod for a pair of dual matches in January. The team that wins both matches in its pod qualifies for the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, hosted Feb. 6-9, at the University of Virginia. The ITA Kick-Off Weekend draft will be held Thursday, beginning at 10 a.m. Memphis will pick 16th to determine its pod site. Last year, Memphis participated in the Kick-Off Weekend event at the University of North Carolina, defeating No. 39 ranked VCU, 4-2, before falling 4-1 to No. 3 North Carolina. Those matches were just two of 14 matches against ranked opponents for Memphis in 2013-14.
