Women's Tennis Selected to Play in 2014 ITA Kick-Off Weekend

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis women's tennis team was selected to participate in their second-straight ITA Kick-Off Weekend, it was announced Wednesday morning. The Lady Tigers will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., January 25-26, to play at the University of North Carolina's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Memphis claimed the second seed after finishing the 2013 season with an 18-7 record and a national ranking of No. 32. The Lady Tigers will face No. 3 seed VCU in the first round and will also be joined by No. 1 North Carolina and No. 4 Denver in Chapel Hill.
VCU went 22-5 this past season and claimed the Atlantic 10 Championship to punch its ticket to the NCAA Tournament. The Rams fell to Tennessee in the first round of the championships, ending the season ranked No. 39. North Carolina finished the season 28-4 while advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals before falling to UCLA. The Tar Heels won the 2013 ITA National Team Indoor Championship and were ranked No. 1 in the country throughout a majority of the season. Denver wrapped up its season with an 18-4 record, missing out on the NCAA Championships after a loss to San Jose State in the Western Athletic Conference finals. The Pioneers ended the year ranked No. 62.
The ITA event consists of four teams playing at 15 sites for a total of 60 squads competing for a chance to play in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The 15 teams that record a 2-0 mark at their site will move on to the championships, which take place Feb. 7-10 at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
