June 7, 2012
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - After recording the most prolific season in school history, the Memphis women's tennis team had five players listed in the final ITA National Rankings. The Tigers also placed six women in the Ohio Valley Region poll.
Three Tigers were ranked in singles in the national poll, led by NCAA Championship-participant Courtney Collins at No. 34. Stefanie Mikesz and Mariya Slupska checked in at Nos. 97 and 98, respectively. Collins, Mikesz and Slupska were ranked in all ten singles polls released during the spring.
Collins, whose berth in the 2012 NCAA DI Women's Tennis Singles Championship was the first in program-history, achieved a program- and personal-best No. 27 on Feb. 27. Mikesz (No. 51) and Slupska (No. 70) also reached career-high rankings this season.
The U of M had a strong showing in the Ohio Valley region as well, with the team finishing fifth. Collins was the second ranked player in the region behind Tennessee's Brynn Boren. Mikesz, Slupska and Welcher claimed spots 10, 11 and 12 in order and Hibberd grabbed the 19th ranking in the region. Welcher and Hibberd were ranked fourth in doubles and the duo of Collins and Kelly Gray earned the tenth position.
As a team, Memphis ended the season with a 16-5 record and No. 60 ranking. The U of M picked up wins against three nationally-ranked teams, Columbia (No. 65), Princeton (No. 49) and Kansas State (No. 67), and all five losses came to teams ranked 26th or higher.
The C-USA coaches recognized the Tigers' success by doling multiple awards to the women's tennis team. Collins, the recipient of the 2012 ITA Ohio Valley Region Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship, was named first team all-conference singles for the second-straight season. Mikesz, Slupska and Welcher were given nods to the second team and Hibberd earned a spot on the third team. Hibberd and Welcher partnered to be named All-C-USA Third Team Doubles.
