MEMPHIS, Tenn. -The University of Memphis women's tennis team placed a program-high seven student-athletes, which tied for fourth-most in the nation, on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Scholar-Athlete list while also being named an all-academic team for the fourth-straight year, the national organization announced Thursday.

The Lady Tigers posted a program-best 3.695 team GPA for the 2012-13 season, which led all University of Memphis squads. Garnering ITA Scholar-Athlete honors were graduate student Tiffany Welcher, seniors Courtney Collins and Kelly Gray, junior Stefanie Mikesz, sophomores Alyssa Hibberd and Liza Tymchenko and freshman Skylar Kuykendall.

"I am thankful that our team views going to class, learning and excelling in their majors as something they get to do, not something they have to do," said head coach Lee Taylor Walker. "The opportunity to compete and study at a high level is a privilege."

Belmont led the nation with 14 being selected as scholar-athletes while Minnesota and DePaul placed 10 and nine student-athletes on the list, respectively. Other schools also placing seven on the ITA academic list were Boise State, Bryant, Creighton, New Mexico State, Northwestern State, Richmond, Wichita State and Xavier.

For a team to be named all-academic, they must sport a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale. For student-athletes to be selected as a scholar-athlete, they must maintain a 3.5 GPA or above for the academic year, be a varsity letterwinner and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.

Collins and Gray were recognized as scholar-athletes for the fourth time in their careers while Welcher and Hibberd were named to the list for the second time. Mikesz, Kuykendall and Tymchenko were first-time honorees.

With this being Memphis' fourth-straight team academic award, the Lady Tigers have now garnered seven ITA All-Academic Team awards after receiving the honor from 2001-03.

The Lady Tigers will open the 2013-14 season Sept. 20-22 at the CCLR Invitational in Little Rock, Ark., and the Amelia Island 10k in Amelia Island, Fla., Sept. 21-24.
