The matches will be hosted at the Lagoon Park Tennis Complex and the Auburn University Montgomery Tennis Complex. This is the first time that the men's and women's team have played in the same tournament.
"The guys have been practicing hard and we have set some high goals for ourselves," Men's Head Coach Paul Goebel said. "It is always nice to get back and start playing. It is nice to compete against somebody other than one their teammates."
The tournament field includes Division I opponents from Clemson, Troy, New Orleans, Samford and South Alabama, as well as Division II competition from West Florida, North Alabama, Auburn University Montgomery and Columbus State.
Men's doubles play will kick the tournament off on Friday at 8:30 a.m. at the Lagoon Park Tennis Complex, followed by the first round of women's doubles and the second round of men's doubles competition. The Memphis men's tennis team is coming off of a 7-11 record in 2008. New to the team for the 2008-09 season will be junior college transfer Jorge Vazquez and freshmen David Henry and K.C. Grffin. The Memphis women's tennis team enters the 2008-09 season after finishing 2007 with a mark of 9-13. Returning from last season's squad is Ashley Murdock, a Second Team All-C-USA selection in her first season as a Tiger after transferring from LSU. Murdock posted a 15-4 singles record during the 2008 spring season. Also returning is senior Kristin Chamberlain, juniors Amanda Brown, Marjorie Ondeck and Dara Toulch and sophomore Lindsey Wiseman. Joining the returnees will be newcomers Summer Irvin, a native of Queensland, Australia, and Robyn Jones, who is originally from Baton Rouge, La.
